Italian Mass at the Old Cathedral Honoring Bishop Giuseppe Rosati

The Basilica of St Louis, known as the Old Cathedral, will celebrate Mass in Italian on Sunday, November 3 at 2PM for the Italian Catholic community and all those who wish to attend. Fr. Mirco Sosio A.V.I., an Italian priest and spiritual director at Kenrick-Glennon Seminary will be the main celebrant and homilist. The Mass will honor Bishop Giuseppe Rosati, the first bishop of St Louis who built the Old Cathedral.

We thank the Rector of the Old Cathedral and Director of the Office of Sacred Worship, Fr. Nicholas Smith for opening the doors of the oldest cathedral west of the Mississippi River for Italian Catholics in the region. After the Mass, a verified relic of Padre Pio will be on display for veneration. Tenor Scott Kennebeck, Director of the St Louis Cathedral Concerts as well as lead soloist for the New Cathedral along with soprano Stella Markou, professor of music and vocal performance at UMSL, will be the lead cantors. Mr. Daniel Vizer will be principal organist.

Italian Catholics thank the Archdiocese of Saint Louis for their blessing as well as Bishop Mark Rivituso for his support for the new apostolate.

Giuseppe Rosati was a missionary to St Louis' first inhabitants who came directly from Sora in Lazio, in central Italy. Rosati built the Old Cathedral in 1834 and is buried in the crypt of the cathedral. The crypt and cathedral museum will be open to all after the Mass.

The parking lot across from the cathedral will be reserved specifically for those attending.
