Elizabeth Bernhardt, PhD
Lecturer of Italian at Saint Louis University

Buongiorno a tutti! Successivamente ho insegnato all’Università della California a Roma, the American University of Rome, e al Liceo Classico Statale Giulio Cesare sempre a Roma.

I’m writing to introduce myself as part of the Italian Community of St. Louis. My name is Elizabeth Bernhardt and I was born and raised here in St. Louis—and so far this bio is not sounding very Italian! But then I spent about 25 years in Italy, mostly in Bologna and Rome but also in Florence and Basilicata. Among other things there I worked on a PhD in Early Modern History in Bologna (while at the University of Toronto) and then taught for the University of California in Rome, the American University in Rome, and the Liceo Classico Statale Giulio Cesare in Rome. My classes were about various aspects of Italian Renaissance history and Italian Renaissance art history. In Rome I published two textbooks for my art history students and am now working on a book about a 15th c. Bolognese woman and her enormous family. I am currently teaching Italian at SLU and will be offering a course on the History of the Italian Family at Washington University next semester. So yes, I love Italian history and culture. Besides all that though, most importantly I have a daughter; she feels very Roman but is changing fast thanks to her new high school friends here! I am also a proud member of the St. Louis—Bologna Sister Cities organization for which a variety of interesting exchange programs for the coming summer are being developed. So, if you are interested in participating in this exciting new cultural exchange, please send me an email. Thanks for reading this far…and I look forward to meeting you!
